Mission

To monitor the safety of environmental resources vital to public health including public drinking water supplies, ambient air, and food supplies.

What we do

  • Test samples collected by the RI Department of Health, the Department of Environmental Management, other state agencies, public water systems, and private homeowners for a variety of substances that can be harmful to human health.
  • Perform tests in accordance with strict scientific standards set by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and the Center for Disease Control .
  • Monitor wastewater for human pathogens.
  • Maintain emergency laboratory capacity to respond to incidents such as contaminated public water supplies, flooding, and contaminated food.
