Strep Group B (Invasive)
Group B Streptococcus (GBS) causes many types of infections throughout the human body. The infection is considered invasive if the bacteria is found in a normally sterile site in the body, such as blood or spinal fluid.
Symptoms
Symptoms depend on the part of the body that is infected. Common infections include bacteremia, sepsis, pneumonia, skin and bone infections, and meningitis.
How it Spreads
• GBS bacteria are commonly found in people’s bodies. These bacteria naturally live in people's gastrointestinal and genital tracts.
• It is generally unknown how people spread GBS bacteria to others.
• The bacteria can be passed to babies during delivery.
Testing and Diagnosis
• Laboratory testing is used to identify GBS bacteria and culture remains the gold standard.
• It is recommended that anyone who is pregnant be screened for GBS bacteria.
Treatment
Antibiotics are a common treatment for GBS. Some people with soft tissue and bone infections may need additional treatment, such as surgery. Treatment will depend on the type of infection caused by the GBS bacteria.
