Food Testing

Mission

To assure the safety of food supply by testing food products for microbiological and chemical contaminants.

What we do

  • Test food products and other samples (e.g. swabs of surfaces used in food preparation) implicated during investigations of foodborne illness or collected during routine state surveillance of manufactured food products.
  • Identify and quantify microbiological and chemical food contaminants following strict international quality standards.
  • Report food test results to the electronic repository (eLexnet) maintained by the FDA.
  • Participate in the Food Emergency Response Network (FERN), a network of qualified laboratories that respond to food contamination threats to the national food supplies.

Accomplishments

  • In 2016, the Food Testing Program received national accreditation for complying with ISO/IEC 17025:2005 standards by the ANSI-ASQ National Accreditation Board (ANAB).
