Initial Licensing & Renewal Information
The Rhode Island Department of Health (RIDOH) licenses or certifies three different kinds of laboratories. These laboratories have different application and renewal requirements. For all license types, renewal notices are sent out about 60 days before the license expiration date.
Clinical Laboratory Licensing
RIDOH licenses clinical laboratories to protect the health, safety, and welfare of the public. Licenses are effective for 2 years and expire at the end of the calendar year. Clinical labs renew their licenses online.
Analytical Laboratory Certification
RIDOH certifies analytical laboratories to test drinking water, wastewater, and environmental samples for lead and other contaminants. Licenses are effective for 1 year and expire on December 30 of each year. Analytical labs cannot renew their licenses online.
Analytical Laboratory Licensing for Sampling and Testing Cannabis
The Cannabis Laboratory Licensing Program licenses analytical laboratories to collect and analyze cannabis products cultivated and/or manufactured by licensed cultivators, compassion centers, and producers. Licenses are effective for 1 year and expire on December 30 of each year. Analytical labs cannot renew their licenses online.
