Rhode Island Streets Transformation Project

The Rhode Island Streets Transformation Project (RISTP), an initiative launched by RIDOH’s Healthy Eating and Active Living program in 2023, showcases the benefits of community design to promote physical activity and active transportation for Rhode Islanders. The RISTP awards funding to community-based organizations and municipalities with interest in temporary demonstration projects that will either enhance the built environment to encourage physical activity and active transportation or provide a program to the community to promote physical activity. The broader goals for HEAL’s RISTP are: 1) build municipal support for safer, healthier streets 2) expand outdoor green and public spaces 3) expand transportation choices within communities.

Since its launch, the RISTP has successfully awarded a total of 26 demonstration projects statewide from 2023 to 2025.

There continues to be a great deal of interest in RISTP among Rhode Island organizations. The number of RISTP applicants surpasses the amount in grant funding that is available. RISTP will continue in 2026 with projects to advance physical activity and active transportation among children and families.
