Purpose

To assess adolescent behavioral health risks using the Youth Risk Behavior Survey.

Key Information

Health risk behaviors in public school students grades 6 through 12 that contribute to the major causes of death, disease, injury, and social problems.

Key Findings, 2019

  • One in four (25.8%) middle school students and one in three (32.3%) high school students felt sad or hopeless for 2 or more weeks in the past year.
  • Among high school students, feelings of sadness and hopelessness were more common among LGB students and students with a disability
  • Female high school students were more likely to experience dating violence, be bullied at school or cyberbullied.
