Health Professional Loan Repayment Program

Mission

To improve access to care and address health professional shortages that cause disparities in health through the recruitment and retention of health professionals who provide healthcare services in medically underserved communities.

Through the Health Professional Loan Repayment Program (HPLRP), licensed primary care, dental, and mental health clinicians in eligible disciplines can receive loan repayment assistance through the Health Professional Loan Repayment Program (HPLRP). In exchange for loan repayment, you must serve at least two years of service at an approved site in a Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA).

Determine Your Eligibility

To be eligible for a HPLRP award, clinicians must:

  • Be a United States citizen or national (U.S. born or naturalized).
  • Have completed health educational training in an accredited graduate training program and possess a valid and unrestricted license to practice their profession in Rhode Island.
  • Be employed at or have accepted employment at RI HPLPR Approve Site  .
  • Not have any other existing service obligations with other entities.
  • Not be in breach of any other health professional service obligation.
  • Be free from judgments arising from federal debt.
  • Be willing to commit to a 2-year service obligation.

 

Site Eligibility

Site Eligibility

To host HPLRP providers, a practice site must:

  • Be located in a federally designated HPSA in Rhode Island.
  • Be a public or private not-for-profit outpatient facility.
  • Pay the provider a prevailing wage.
  • Use a Sliding Fee Discount program to ensure patients have access to all primary care services for the site type (i.e. behavioral health, dental, etc.).

RISLA is a non-profit agency offering, college planning services,  low cost student loans, scholarships, and student refinancing options to students and families nationwide.

Resources/Opportunities through Wavemaker Fellowship:

The Wavemaker Fellowship provides a financial incentive for health professional working in Rhode Island in the form of an annual refundable tax credit against their Rhode Island income tax to defray the cost of student loan repayments.
