Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention Steering Committee

In the first year of funding (July 2007 – June 2008), the Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention Program carefully identified core partners to initiate the Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention Program Steering Committee.  This was essential to the future of heart disease and stroke systems change in Rhode Island, which requires diverse community partners with multiple skills and interests at the state and local levels.

Internal and external partners serve on the Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention Steering Committee and/or a Steering Committee Work Group. The mission of the committee is to guide, promote and participate in the strategic planning process, develop the statewide plan, and assist in its implementation.  This includes:

  1. Making recommendations for HDSP activities, policies, and strategies.
  2. Integrating disparities in all efforts.
  3. Identifying key policy and environmental changes.

The Steering Committee meets on a quarterly basis.

Work Groups

Steering committee Work Groups help develop the Rhode Island Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention State Plan by identifying current activities and needs. They also make activity, policy, and strategy recommendations and conduct advocacy around health disparity, policy, and environmental change issues. The Work Groups are organized around five focus areas:

  • Community and Work Sites
  • Emergency Medical Services (EMS)
  • Healthcare Systems
  • Stroke (includes the Rhode Island Stroke Taskforce)

Future plans may include the addition of a Partnership and Sodium Reduction Work Group. All Work Groups are chaired by a community representative and receive technical assistance from the Department of Health. Work Groups meet as needed and are responsible for providing updates to the Steering Committee.
